Supporting Employees To Battle The 'Blue Monday' Blues

1 in 4 of us experience depression at some point in our lives

"Blue Monday" is the name given to the third Monday in January and has been labeled as the most depressing day of the year. It has been given its gloomy title due to a combination of post-Christmas blues and cold, dark weather

1 in 4 of us experience depression at some point in our lives, according to the mental health charity Mind, so the day presents an opportunity, it can be a great stepping stone to starting conversations about mental health in the workplace.

Here are 5 top tips to help you beat the blues in January and beyond… Share with friends and team members to help navigate the most depressing day of the year!

1. Talk about what your feeling and dont be afraid to ask for help

2. Eat well and drink sensibly

3. Spend time doing something you're good at!

4. Keep in touch with people even if its on the phone

5. Accept who you are - Your pretty great!

For employers, its important to create a supportive enviroment in the work place where staff feel able to talk openly about mental health. Employers have a 'duty of care'. This means they must do all they reasonably can to support their employees' health, safety and wellbeing.

If staff feel they can talk openly about mental health, problems are less likely to build up. This could lead to:

  • less time off for a mental health issue

  • improved morale at work
